Kodiak, Alaska is arguably the best fishing destination in the entire world. With so many places to go, beautiful scenery and thousands upon thousands of salmon and halibut, you can understand why anglers enjoy fishing in Kodiak. While most anglers think of salmon when they think of Alaska fishing, there are fish called halibut that provide some spectacular fishing opportunities.
Pacific Halibut can grow extremely big with t fish averaging around 30 pounds and some fish exceeding 600 pounds. Most of these fish are caught near the bottom, but they will come up in the water column to feed and we have often seen halibut feeding directly under our charter boat.
Larsen Bay where our lodge is located has excellent salt water fishing for halibut and salmon as well as good salmon and trout fishing on area rivers and streams.
Kodiak Island has the best halibut fishing in Alaska. The vast open ocean waters around the coast of Kodiak or the inside waters of Shelikoff Straights could easily produce a once-in-a-lifetime halibut.
Several other factors also make Larsen Bay a top choice for an Alaska fishing vacation. First and foremost, the salmon fishing gets red hot, especially the coho fishing with generous five fish limits. Early in the season, from mid May until mid July anglers can also enjoy spectacular king fishing. Typically anglers can catch a limit of salmon and halibut in the same day, making our destination one the favorites, especially when fishing with Alaska's Kodiak Island Resort!
For anglers who want to target triple digit halibut it’s simply a matter of asking the guide prior to departing on your trip.Bbe aware that we practice catch and release on most large fish. This practice has worked out well and provides many anglers the chance to catch large fish without depleting the resource. Anglers who want to go home with their more-than-generous fish limit of 2 halibut per day won't be disappointed. We almost always limit our customers on halibut.
Savy anglers who fish for three or four days will likely notice that our captains self regulate themselves by fishing in areas with average-sized halibut most days and fish areas with larger halibut only part of the time. This practice as worked well to maintain the resource and works out well for anglers who want to bring the highest quality halibut fillets from halibut weighing 30 to 50 pounds. As stated above, if you want to catch bigger fish let your captain know your intentions ahead of time – including your desire to release big fish or keep them. It’s much better to communicate your wishes with the captain prior to booking your trip.
