Alaska Fishing Lodges

Around Kodiak Island, extreme tides and surging ocean currents create a habitat for millions of baitfish that attract annual returns of trophy-size salmon, halibut, yelloweye rockfish, and ling cod. This natural occurrence, which first attracted commercial fishermen to our area, creates the best fishing grounds in Alaska for salmon and halibut. Our Alaska Fishing Lodge provides the best amenities along with the best fishing anywhere.

No Alaska saltwater fishing trip is complete without battling the Pacific halibut. These fish are often big and offer a fight that is sure to please any angler. Halibut fishing is great from May through mid-October. But here's an inside tip: July is the "sleeper" month for trophy halibut as most anglers are pursuing other species of salmon and trout, leaving the halibut grounds as deserted. This is when we enjoy some of our finest catches of the year.

We fish in the Sheilikoff Straights, which is located between the Alaskan mainland and Kodiak Island. We also fish the numerous area bays and inside waters and that means no ocean swell, which makes for easier fishing, more fish, and virtually no seasickness.

There are several ways to fish for Alaska halibut, with many anglers choosing both leadhead or metal jigs and bait. Halibut in our area concentrate along the sandy bottoms, rock pinnacles, and steep glacier-carved ledges. Unique holding structure and limited tidal activity allow Kodiak halibut to feed in relatively shallow water from 50 to 90 feet. Only 8-16 ounces of weight is required to reach and remain on bottom. Some of the more popular halibut areas found elsewhere in the state require a 500-foot drop with three pounds of lead! At Kodiak Island Resort we almost always use light sinkers in calm currents to allow our anglers the most fun with the least amount of fishing effort.

Think of Alaska's Kodiak Island Resort when planning your Alaska fishing vacation and adventure.
