James Hiemstra from Hillsborough, California came to Alaska with his family for an Alaska adventure. Upon arriving young James ( 10 years old) showed his mom, dad and two older brothers how to catch halibut by boating a 73 pounder on his first drop on the first spot he fished. After putting his number on the board James waited three days for someone in his family to eclipse his big fish. When no one could mount a challenge he dropped down a 6 ounce Crippled Herring and promptly boated a 109 pound behemoth. After boating the big halibut the entire family surrendered, declared James the family fishing champion and asked to return to the lodge to lick their wounds.
James caught his big fish on 20 pound class tackle and fought the big fish for 30 minutes, while withstanding several reel screaming runs. The rest of his family, including older brothers Emmit and Henry, did catch several king salmon, halibut and yelloweye rockfish during the three days.
